First-Year Global Fellows program in Italy a huge success
First-year students spend seven weeks in beautiful Tuscany, Italy learning coursework, meeting with local leaders, visiting area businesses and touring the local sites
.
M. Todd Harper, director of the Global Fellows, reports that the program has been a tremendous success. “Having first-year students on the program makes everything an adventure,” said Harper. The students are soaking up as much as they can. To date, the students have had two weeks of the course curriculum, visited an organic farm and a natural reservoir and participated in Italian cooking lessons. The students will soon complete a service project in Rome, take a trip to the Vatican, visit the Pienza and an olive press.
The initiative is a collaborative effort between the Division of Global Affairs and University College to create the Global Fellows Program. The program offers first-year students the opportunity to fulfill many of their first-year curriculum requirements while spending seven weeks of the fall semester in Italy.

As Global Fellows, students have the opportunity to spend half of the fall semester on campus and the other half in Italy. This unique 7 + 7 approach is designed to help students prepare to compete in the global market, develop international and national perspectives, and get a head start on community, civic and leadership training. Students are also assigned mentors to maximize the experience.
Harper is looking forward to meeting next year’s Global Fellows.
