2015 Connie Burns Scholarship award granted to Leven School student

This year's Georgia Recycling Coalition (GRC) Connie Burns Scholarship went to Culinary Sustainability and Hospitality student Makayla Graves.
Graves, a current junior, received notification that she was chosen to receive the $1000 award that will be presented at the GRC’s annual conference August 18 at the King & Prince Resort in St. Simon’s Island, Georgia. “Receiving this award has been a tremendous honor and is valuable to furthering my studies here at the Michael A. Levin School of Culinary Sustainability and Hospitality. I was very excited and honored when I received the notice that I had been awarded this scholarship I worked so hard for. I am very passionate about my culinary studies, the sustainable practices that are implemented to help preserve and protect the environment, as well as giving back and helping others in need,” said Graves.
She has plans for adding a marketing minor to supplement her degree but is undecided as to what future career to pursue. “No matter what I choose, this degree offers a huge window of opportunity to pursue anything I set my mind to,” shared Graves.
GRC, in partnership with the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) Georgia Chapter, established the Connie Burns Scholarship Program dedicated to assisting and mentoring Georgia college and university students interested in a career in recycling, composting, environmental practices and sustainability.
